DRIVING PASSION

Among the various types of collecting, the classic car sector is the most dynamic and in recent years it has captured the spotlight.

One of the main reasons for its success is certainly the interest shown by a new group of enthusiasts, some even very young, that has been fascinated by the heroic aura pervading the vintage motor vehicle industry; in an age when impersonal technology and design rule, getting behind the wheel of cars with strong identities unaffected by the excessive utilisation of electronics may give that sense of primordial boldness typical of pioneer motorists.

Another reason for such success is definitely tied to the sector’s revaluation performances, which, in the last decade (2008-2018) came close to achieving percentages averaging almost 300% (source: Knight Frank WEALTH REPORT ). The second semester of 2018 confirmed the industry’s strength with some surprising plot twists such as the record set for the sale of a car (1962 Ferrari 250 GTO#3413GT, sold for 48.4 million dollars). With the most unscrupulous speculators steering investments towards new sectors, at the moment the market is maturing in terms of stability, especially for those who collect cars driven by their own passion.

The Italian market which has achieved increasingly better results with a growing number of collectors attending auctions, was full of surprises despite the fact that it has always been considered a poorly receptive market with regard to classic car auctions. Many believe that such unexpected success is partly due to the above-mentioned generation turnover currently in progress, as well as to the confidence placed in auction houses which, by selecting high-quality cars, protect potential buyers from unpleasant surprises. Italian collectors also show great interest in the so-called Automobilia, as proven by the excellent results achieved by Aste Bolaffi’s auction held on 17 November in Turin.

On a global level, the results of the most recent international auctions highlight a clear trend that rewards the fascination with originality, specimens with a well-documented history and cars with low mileage. The most demanding collectors confirmed their appreciation for unique specimens, for rare yet affordable cars and for vehicles with an interesting history, potentially belonging to important individuals. If one of these elements doesn’t apply, some emotional aspects during the purchasing stage may be missing as well; in this case, the important thing is a balance between quality and price. Looking to the future, the most interesting trends envisaged by the experts concern a new-found interest in pre-war vehicles and new attention paid to saloon models, which are certainly with lower performance than coupé cars and less challenging to drive, but enjoyable in the company of friends or family.

In the upcoming classic car auction organized for 24 May in Arese, Aste Bolaffi has selected its items looking at these trends; we can't reveal too much just yet, but we can say that you will surely have nice surprises!
