The Numismatics Auction takes place in the Sala Bolaffi in Turin on Thursday 30th and Friday 31st of May. The Zante Collection (250 lots), the pride of the whole sale, will open the auction: the collections of coins from the Regno di Sardegna and the Regno d’Italia period are exceptionally well preserved and extremely rare, among which, to name just a few, the 20 Lire issued in Bologna in 1860 during the transition towards Italian unity (auction starting price 50,000 euros), the 50 Lire 1864 of Vittorio Emanuele II (auction starting price 100,000 euros) and also the series of four gold denominations of the Aratrice (the plougher) of 1927 (total auction starting price 55,000 euros).
The auction will continue with some coinages from antiquity to the present day, with forays into the world of paper money and medals. The section devoted to Roman coins is quite large and with several outstanding denarii of excellent workmanship (Julius Caesar, auction starting price 1,500 euros; Gordiano I and Gordiano II, (auction starting price 1,000 euros for both) and a fabulous gold coin of Giulia Domna, Settimio Severo’s wife, coined at Laodicea, in current Syria (auction starting price 15,000 euros).
The section dedicated to oriental and Islamic coins is unusual, with 50 interesting and exotic lots which are the forerunners of most of the coins from the Italian mints, from the Middle Ages to the unity. Besides many single specimens, 5 Doppie 1640 of Genoa (auction starting price 15,000 euros) and the specimen of 8 Doppie 1786 of Ferdinando I di Borbone for Parma (auction starting price 12,000 euros) are outstanding. The section is embellished with a small specialist collection of the Zecca di Benevento (Benevento mint), very interesting for the state of preservation of the coins that are shown.
(Lot 50 – 100 Lire Aratrice 1927)
(lot 507 – Aureo al nome e con l’effigie di Giulia Domna, moglie dell’Imperatore, 200-207 d.C.)
(lot 790 – Governo dei Dogi Biennali 1528-1797 – 5 Doppie 1640)
The important section of Casa Savoia (the Savoy House) ranges from Carlo Emanuele III to Vittorio Emanuele I, and up to the patterns of Vittorio Emanuele III. The two patterns of the 50 Lire Cinquantenario (Fiftieth Anniversary) of 1911 (15,000 and 18,000 euros) and the pattern of the 100 Lire Vetta d’Italia (the mountaintop of Italy) 1925 (auction starting price 30,000 euros), in particular, are extremely rare, side by side with the two gold sample issues of 1906 and 1907 (20,000 euros starting price for both).
Foreign coins close the auction, among which the 20 Dollars 1907 (auction starting price 10,000 euros), the section of paper money with other important rarities of the Regno d’Italia (the Kingdom of Italy) period, such as the 25 Lire 1902 (auction starting price 8,000 euros), the medals and the multiple lots.
