Following the success of the previous editions, a new
Sport Memorabilia auction is coming up on 6 May in live internet mode on astebolaffi.it: for the first time a spring session will be added to the usual December sale dedicated to sports memorabilia, by now a fixed appointment in the
Aste Bolaffi calendar, since 2016.
Among the top lots, the
bike raced by Gino Bartali in 1947, different football shirts of
Maradona, and one of
Paolo Rossi at the beginning of his career with the Lanerossi Vicenza football club. In the next catalogue, 218 lots in total, the sports protagonists are cycling, boxing and, obviously, football, to the delight of all fans and collectors of the sector.
CYCLING
The absolute top lot of the auction is
Gino Bartali’s racing bike, a Legnano Corse cycling team example built by mechanic and frame builder Ugo Bianchi for the champion. Bartali used it in the 1947 season in which he won the Milan-Sanremo, the Tour of Switzerland, and came second in the Giro d'Italia. The bike is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity by Dino Bianchi, Ugo’s son (Lot 48, estimate 50,000-60,000 euros).
In the cycling section, six more “vintage” bicycles from the 1920s to the 1950s, and various vintage jerseys from the 1960s and 1980s, but also a diary attributed to
Giuseppe ‘Pinella’ De Grandi, the mechanic of Bianchi cycles and Fausto Coppi, with various handwritten notes regarding ratios, weights and performances of the cyclists he followed in the races from 1934 to 1950, including the “Campionissimo” (Champion of Champions) (Lot 17, estimate 1,500-2,000 euros), and a suitcase that accompanied Pinella in the stages of a Tour de France in the 1940s and 1950s (Lot 18, estimate 750-1,000 euros).
FOOTBALL
The section dedicated to football, as always the richest, boasts some extremely rare football shirts, in particular the Lanerossi Vicenza team shirt worn by
Paolo Rossi in the 1977-1978 season (Lot 216, estimate 15,000-20,000 euros) and
a collection of number 10 shirts from the 1980s to 2000, including
Del Piero, Totti, Baggio, and especially
Maradona. The two most important shirts of the ‘Pibe de Oro’ (Golden Boy), both “match worn”, are those of his first season at
Napoli 1984/1985 (the so-called “Cirio” from the name of the sponsor), extremely rare, worn on the occasion of the championship match Cremonese-Napoli, played on 14 April 1985 in Cremona (1-1) and exchanged at the end of the match with his opponent Juary (Lot 207, estimate 25,000-30,000 euros) and the jersey of the
Argentine National Team that was worn only once in the history of the “Albiceleste” football shirts, in the pre-world cup friendly match against Norway-Argentina on 30 April 1986 (1-0), which was then banned by the coach Carlos Bilardo, known for his superstition. The provenance is that of his friend, national teammate and ‘raiding partner’ José Luis "Tata" Brown (Lot 89, estimate 20,000-25,000 euros).
BOXING
With regard to boxing, one of the most sought-after lots is
the commemorative belt dedicated to Carlos Monzon, awarded to the world famous boxer for his induction into the Hall of Fame in October 1996, coming from Henry Pessar, French photographer and biographer of the book “Moi, Carlos Monzon – Memoires Recueillis Par Henry Pessar” (1975) (Lot 11, estimate 3,500-5,000 euros). Finally, we must mention the
two tickets for the World Middleweight Championship related to two of Monzon’s matches in 1973-74 (Lot 10, estimate 350-500 euros).
