THE MOST EXPENSIVE BOTTLE EVER SOLD IN ITALY

100,000 euros, including buyers' premium, is the amazing amount knocked down for a double magnum of Romanée Conti Grand Cru of 1990 at the Bolaffi Auction of Fine Wines and Spirits. It is the most expensive single bottle ever sold in Italy. “An unobtainable lot, considering that the most famous Cru of this Domaine vineyard is very rare in itself in the normal format and that of a double magnum is imported once every decade in Italy. 1990 was a particularly prestigious vintage”, commented the CEO of Aste Bolaffi, Filippo Bolaffi. The sale was over after eleven hours in a row, with a total result of 835,000 euros, 99% of lots sold and over 480 participants from all over the world: a real “record of enthusiasm” with dozens of offers on every single lot that more than doubled the auction bases. An incredible success especially for Italian wines, with Piedmont and Tuscany in the lead, whose quotations have now reached those of French wines.

On the podium of the best results there was also a Barolo Monfortino Riserva of 1955 in the historic quarter format of Brenta (13.05 litres) up to 20,000 euros, and a bottle of Romanée-Conti Grand Cru of 2004 sold for 15,000 euros. “The complicated 2020 for us at Bolaffi Auctions will be remembered (also) as an excellent vintage for wine auctions. We have never had so much demand as this year, as demonstrated by the extraordinary success of the four auctions organised, two of which in full lockdown in the spring. With the restaurants closed and isolation at home, we noticed that collectors and wine lovers did not give up their passion and indeed seemed to cultivate it more and more, investing in large bottles or ‘consoling themselves’ by drinking them,” concluded Filippo Bolaffi.
