WORKS OF ART FROM PRESTIGIOUS PRIVATE COLLECTIONS UP FOR AUCTION

Auction on Tuesday, April 2 at Sala Bolaffi in Turin. Exhibition from Thursday, March 28

The next appointment with an auction of furnishings, paintings and art objects is scheduled for Tuesday, April 2 at Sala Bolaffi in Turin. The catalogue is large and diversified, and consists of 638 lots from prestigious commissions and ranges from Oriental art to Western silverware, paintings and furnishings from the 18th to the 20th century.

The sale will open with 133 artifacts of Oriental art, among which an important dinner service (China, second half of the 19th century) decorated with polychrome enamels and golden coatings in “Canton” style (lot 109, opening bid 8,000 euros), and Japanese xylographs, great classics of Hokusai and Hiroshige in rare 19th century runs, as well as Chinese silver jewelry from the early 20th century and small sculptures in coral and jade.

In the second part of the auction, dedicated to important private Italian collections, a selection of silverware from Piedmont stands out – including a beautiful set of rare 18th century sugar bowls, as well as valuable candlesticks and contemporary dishes – and a set of Italian and Flemish still lifes, including  “Natura morta con fiori, zucca e fichi (Still life with flowers, pumpkin and figs)” attributed to Abraham Brueghel (1631-1697), great-grandson of Peter Brueghel the Elder and thus belonging to one of the most important dynasties of Flemish artists (lot 212, opening bid 30,000 euros) .

Among the most important lots of the sale there is also a 17th century Nordic School work depicting "Giuditta con la testa di Oloferne (Judith with Holofernes' head)" (lot 447, opening bid 20,000 euros): coming from Villa Wanda, Licio Gelli’s residence in Arezzo, the work was listed as cultural interest by the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape in 2016 as considered to be by Giovanni Lanfranco. The real author is rather to be sought in the ranks of Caravaggio's followers in the north of the Alps, between France and Holland.

A prestigious collection from Turin includes two rare works by Giuseppe Pietro Bagetti (1764-1831): the oil on canvas “Il naufragio (The shipwreck)” (lot 379, opening bid 10,000 euros) and a tempera depicting the “Castello di Racconigi (Racconigi Castle)” (lot 389, opening bid 6,000 euros), as well as mirrors, porcelains and silverware.

Among the furnishings, there are also Venetian and French furniture including an important bureau cabinet (Venice, first half of the 18th century) entirely lacquered in chinoiserie on a red base (lot 513, opening bid 15,000 euros) and a fall front desk attributed to Martin Carlin (Paris, second half of the 18th century) in mahogany and golden bronzes with red marble top (lot 515, opening bid 10,000 euros).

The lots will be exhibited to the public at Sala Bolaffi from Thursday, March 28 until the day of the auction, Sunday included.
