Realizzato nel 1970 in 999 esemplari, la referenza 5100 fu il primo orologio al quarzo prodotto da Rolex,
e allo stesso tempo fu il primo modello della Maison dotato di vetro zaffiro e rimessa rapida per il datario.
è animato dal calibro Beta 21, il rivoluzionario movimento frutto della collaborazione tra il Centre Electronique
Horologer e un consorzio di Case elvetiche (tra cui Patek Philippe, Omega, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Longines, IWC…),
che rappresentò il calibro al quarzo più preciso al mondo, accurato ai 5 secondi per mese.
Per coronare il debutto di questo orologio, la casa istituì il "Rolex Quartz Club", oltre che un Libro d’Oro dove gli
esclusivi proprietari del modello avrebbero potuto apporre la loro firma e avere il privilegio di una visita guidata
presso la sede Rolex a Ginevra. Il 5100 ebbe un brevissimo ma prorompente successo commerciale, e tutti i pezzi
vennero venduti ancora prima di raggiungere il mercato.
L’orologio proposto in asta è in condizioni perfette, essendo stato raramente utilizzato, ed è reduce da una
revisione completa effettuata a gennaio 2019 da un noto laboratorio. Con il suo numero di edizione limitata “15”
rappresenta uno dei primissimi esemplari di 5100 proposti in asta negli ultimi anni.
Made in 1970 with a production of only 999 pieces, the 5100 reference was the first quartz watch produced by
Rolex, and at the same time it was the first model of the Maison featuring sapphire crystal and quick-set date.
It is powered by the Beta 21 calibre, the revolutionary movement which was the result of the collaboration
between the Centre Electronique Horologer and a consortium of Swiss brands (including Patek Philippe, Omega,
Jaeger-LeCoultre, Longines, IWC ...), which represented the most accurate quartz caliber in the world, accurate to
5 seconds per month.
To crown the debut of this watch, the Maison established the "Rolex Quartz Club", as well as a Golden Book where
the exclusive owners of the model could place their signatures and have the privilege of a guided tour of the Rolex
headquarters in Geneva. The 5100 had a very short but extensive commercial success, and all the pieces were sold
even before reaching the market.
The watch included in this auction is in perfect condition, having been rarely used, and has just had a complete
overhaul carried out in January 2019 by a well-known laboratory. With its limited edition number "15" it represents
one of the very first specimens of the 5100 proposed at auction in recent years.
