OROLOGIO DA TASCA SAVONETTE A REMONTOIR
CON TRIPLA COMPLICAZIONE, RIPETIZIONE A MINUTI,
CALENDARIO PERPETUO E CRONOGRAFO, FIRMATO
FRANZ MICHAELSEN, PERIODO INIZI ‘900
Cassa “massive” a quattro corpi in oro 18K, “bassine et filet”,
cuvette siglata “n. 5225 Franz Michaelsen Rome”, punzonato
all’interno del fondello n. 1105. Collarino a barchetta
e pendente ad arco.
Quadrante in smalto bianco, numerazione romana
per le ore, suddivisione della minuteria, scala del cronografo
esterna suddivisa a 1/5 di secondo, quadrantini ausiliari
ribassati dei secondi, dei calendari e dell’anno bisestile,
finestrella per le fasi della luna. Lancette “poires stuart”
dorate per le ore, lancetta del crono centrale e dei contatori
brunite. Indicazioni della rimessa a segno dei calendari
in prossimità della lunetta, rimessa a segno delle ore tramite
levetta.
Meccanica anonima a remontoir, ébauche probabilmente
della Vallée des Joux, 18’’’ linee, a ponti separati
e con rubini, nichelata, rifinita e con lavorazione
ad “anglage”, scappamento ad ancora dritta, bilanciere
bimetallico compensato e con viti, spirale Breguet brunita,
regolazione a indice. Ripetizione a minuti su gong,
regolatore ad ancora e rubini supplementari, slitta
per il funzionamento sulla carrure. Cronografo
con leveraggio a vista e pulsante sulla carrure al “12”.

Franz Michaelsen fu un importante concessionario di origine
tedesca che trasferitosi a Roma nel 1891 rilevò l’attività
di Carl Kobell in via delle Convertite. Formatosi presso
la Patek alla fine dell’ottocento, ben presto divenne oltre ad
essere un orologiaio anche concessionario delle
più blasonate case orologiaie svizzere. Nonostante
la prematura dipartita di Michaelsen, l’attività proseguì
a cavallo delle due Guerre Mondiali venendo acquisita
prima da Monetti e in un secondo momento da Hausmann.

Four body massive 18K gold case, “bassine et filet”, dome
signed “n. 5225 Franz Michaelsen Rome”, punched inside
the case back n. 1105. Shaped pendant and oval bow.
White enamel dial, Roman hour numerals, minute track,
outer 1/5th seconds chronograph division, sunk subsidiary
dials for the seconds, the calendars and the leap year,
aperture for the moon phase. Gilt “poires stuart” hands,
blued hands for subsidiary dials and chronograph.
Indications for setting calendars near the bezel,
lever-setting mechanisms to set the time.
Anonymous key-less movement, probably a Vallée des Joux
ébauche, 18’’’ lignes, separated bridges with jewels,
nickel-finished, beveled and pattern decorated, straight-line
lever escapement, bimetallic cut compensated balance
with screws, blued Breguet hairspring, index regulation.
Minute repeater on gong, anchor governor, extra jewels,
winding by slide on the band. Visibile chronograph
leverages and push piece at “12”.

Franz Michaelsen was an important dealer of German
origin and when he moved to Rome in 1891 he took over
Carl Kobell’s business in via delle Convertite.
Trained at the Patek during the end of nineteenth century
he quickly became, in addition to a well skilled watchmaker,
a dealer of the most important Swiss watchmaker
manufacturers. Despite the premature death of Michaelsen,
the activity continued throughout the two World Wars, being
acquired by Monetti and later by Hausmann.
