Durante il secondo soggiorno a New York (1947-1949) Depero si dedicò a varie ideazioni teatrali, e tra queste vi era “Eclisse sotterranea”,
una piéce ambientata nella Subway di New York dove alcuni personaggi dovevano custodire segretamente un prisma magico. Il presente
disegno è quadrettato perché è il finale per una trasposizione pittorica di uno dei momenti della storia. Purtroppo del dipinto finale non
se ne sa nulla... forse venduto da Depero a New York. A parte il soggetto, per la datazione siamo confortati sia dalla ‘foggia’ dei polpacci
della donna in primo piano e del figurino semi- nascosto, che sono tipici di altri disegni e dipinti del secondo dopoguerra (come in
“Strappo di vento” o “Bastoni e bastonati”, ambedue del 1948) e inoltre dalla figurazione del cane che è propria del cane dipinto in uno
dei grandi pannelli del Ristorante “Enrico & Paglieri”, appunto realizzati da Depero nel corso sempre del 1948.

artist’s works with the entry number: FD-4492-DIS.
During his second stay in New York (1947-1949) Depero devoted himself to various theatrical ideas, and among these there was “Eclisse
sotterranea”, a piéce set in the New York Subway where some characters had to secretly guard a magical prism. This drawing is squared
because it is the ending for a pictorial transposition of one of the moments in the story. Unfortunately nothing is known about the final
painting, perhaps sold by Depero in New York. Apart from the subject, for the dating we are comforted both by the ‘shape’ of the calves
of the woman in the foreground and of the semi-hidden figure, which are typical of other drawings and paintings of the post-war period
(as in “Strappo di vento” or “ Sticks and sticks”, both from 1948) and also from the figuration of the dog which is precisely the dog painted
in one of the large panels of the “Enrico & Paglieri” restaurant, made by Depero in 1948.
